Resource Recovery Drive @ Fall Quarter Move-In

The recycling drive takes place in several locations near the residence halls during move-in weekend, so items such as cardboard and polystyrene (styrofoam) can be recycled.

How Does It Work?

Recycling stations will provide a place to deposit cardboard and polystyrene that is no longer needed. Please use the maps to find a location near you, look for signage or ask the appropriate staff person to assist you.

What Happens to the Materials?

The cardboard will be delivered to Smurfit-Stone in Sacramento. Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. is one of the nations' largest manufacturers of corrugated packaging that uses reclaimed material to make new products.

The polystyrene (styrofoam), a common packaging component of electronic items, is taken to HP's Roseville recycling center. They have special machines that can condense the material for reuse. Recycled polystyrene can be found in food containers, packaging, park benches, architectural molding, flower pots, stationery products and more.

Don't Forget About Regular Recycling

Other items that can be recycled at UC Davis include paper, chipboard, paperboard, newspapers and magazines, containers labeled as #1 or #2, plastics, steel, tin and aluminum.

Did You Know?

Styrofoam is a trademark of Dow Chemical Company for extruded polystyrene foam. It has become common to use styrofoam as a generic term to describe all polystyrene foams, such as cups and food containers.

Polystyrene is recyclable and has a resin identification code of #6. However, it is not easily recycled because it takes up a lot of space and requires special machinery.

This is an important material recycle or reduce, when possible. Polystyrene does not biodegrade and because it is light weight, is easily spread in the outdoors.
