Baggins End – General Information

Campus Location

Baggins End is a small cooperative located on the west side of the central UC Davis campus, nestled in between Orchard Park apartments to the north, the experimental gardens to the south, various campus administration buildings to the east and Hwy 113 to the west.

About the Buildings

Build and Design

Baggins End is made up of fourteen domes, each one manufactured from fiberglass, shaped in a mold. Each dome has a custom interior, complete with a kitchen, full bathroom, living area, and two bedrooms. In truth, the small domes make extremely efficient use of space. Refer to the Baggins End [Housing Areas] webpage to view photographs of the domes.

Furnishings

The domes are not furnished; residents supply their own bedding and furniture. The Baggins End community encourages reuse of no-longer-used items, including furniture, among community members, so often, new residents may be able to acquire currently-unused furniture and clothing from the community.

Flooring

Baggins End's domes typically have carpeted flooring, but each dome may have a different variation of flooring. Prospective residents should contact the Baggins End community with specific questions.

Kitchens and Bathrooms

It's a popular question: are there actually kitchens and bathrooms in the domes? Yes, naturally. Full kitchens include countertops for preparing food and are furnished with a full-size stove, range, and refrigerator. Bathrooms, although extremely efficient in their use of space, include a single sink and a full shower.

Closets and Storage

Baggins End's domes typically do not have built-in closets, but because each dome is unique, each one offers a different take on storage, including clothing storage. Domes may include built-in shelving, moveable shelves, and semi-permanent open-area clothing storage (such as clothing rods hung from the ceiling to maximize three-dimensional space usage).

Gardens

Baggins End enjoys many acres of gardens, lawn, and trees. The community grows a lot of its own food (they also share food with the Tri-Cooperatives communities), and hosts weekly work parties where residents spend time together while tending to the gardens. The lawns are communal, although UC Davis Facilities maintain the lawns themselves.

Community Yurt

A large yurt, used for indoor community events, is located adjacent to the main lawn. The yurt has several windows, two doors, electricity and full lighting, and features a concrete floor that is effectively heated by pumping solar-heated water through the foundation.

Laundry

Residents may access the Orchard Park Apartment laundry facilities to do their laundry; there are no washing machines or dryers in Baggins End. However, in the spirit of sustainable living, the community encourages residents to hang one's clothing to dry in lieu of using a dryer.

The Baggins End residence is an open, approachable community that encourages prospective residents to content them with any questions; please consider emailing them to learn more.
