Computer Information for Prospective Residents

UC Davis expects students to have access to computers during their academic careers, and most students bring their own computers. Students also have access to several campus computer labs; Student Housing residents have access to a high speed network, ResNet, and students who live in the residence halls also have access to Student Housing Computer Centers, which are located in the residence hall communities.

To get acquainted with Student Housing’s ResNet network and computer policies, read the following material and the webpages that are linked to below.

  • ResNet Residential Networking
    • ResNet is the Student Housing high speed network and is available to all Student Housing residents
    • Refer to the ResNet website to learn about connectivity, policy, and safety and for computer resources
  • Resnet Connections
    • Incoming Student Housing residents may set their computers up in advance to connect on the ResNet network
    • Review the get connected section on the ResNet website for instructions
  • Wireless Networking
    • Wireless networking is available in several public spaces within the residence halls, as well as several campus locations
    • Due to security restrictions, wireless networking is not available in students’ rooms and suites, and setting up additional wireless network access points is prohibited
    • A wireless networking card is required; students must register their wireless card hardware address to access the wireless network
    • Refer to the Campus Wireless Network Services page for more wireless networking information
    • Refer to the campus Wireless Communications Policy
    • Refer to the wireless coverage maps for campus locations with wireless access
  • Practice Safe Computing
    • Take appropriate steps to secure and maintain the computer and avoid practices that make the computer vulnerable to viruses and hackers
    • Recommended: Windows users should use Windows automatic updates to install current patches; all students should avoid peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing applications like Limewire, turn off file-sharing, and install anti-virus software
    • Current students may download free virus software from MyUCDavis (select the UD Resources tab, then select Software); when running software, be sure to enable the automatic update feature
