Orville E. Thompson
Professor Emeritus, Human and Community Development
Professor Emeritus Orville Thompson was one of the founding faculty of what is now known as the Department of human and Community Development. From 1954 until his retirement in 1988, Professor Thompson was extremely active in undergraduate education. He mentored students and colleagues alike with his strong beliefs in multi-disciplinary education. In 1967, with Professor Thompson's leadership and a great deal of involvement by students, the Department of Applied Behavioral Science was formed. His leadership helped ensure that students be given ownership of their education by self-selection of specializations within their majors. Professor Thompson devoted many years to UC Davis ensuring excellence in teaching. He served as instructor, researcher, and chair of the department. He also devoted much of his time to the Work-Learn Career Planning and Placement Office (Internship and Career Center), served on the International House board for 20 years, and has been active in the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity for 60 years. Professor Thompson continues to inspire great things in others. He has stated: "You will achieve much more in life through your influence on others than through what you do as an individual."
