California redwood (sequoia)

Sequoia

Sequoia sempervirens, California redwood

California's majestic redwoods invoke a sense of place and of peace. California coastal redwoods reach for the clouds and grow for hundreds of years. Limited to narrow portions of California's diverse ecosystem, redwoods thrive in a summer fog belt and need many inches of natural rainfall to survive. Redwood trees provide habitat for mammals, birds and amphibians. California's nearly 150,000 acres of redwood groves draw visitors from around the globe. One of the most photographed areas of the UC Davis campus is the Arboretum's T. Elliot Weir Redwood Grove, home to one of the largest collections of coast redwood trees outside their native range. For more information visit the UC Davis Arboretum gardens webpage.

Information about sequoias (California redwoods) is provided by the UC Davis Arboretum. Please stay in touch! Like the UC Davis Arboretum on Facebook and sign-up for the Arboretum e-newsletter to stay informed of student learning opportunities.
