Assignment Criteria
Student Housing considers four applicant-submitted criteria when determining room assignments for each incoming resident. They are: environment, occupancy, program, and room configuration. Applicants receive the opportunity to indicate their preference for each criteria during the online application process, and may arrange the four criteria into an ordered priority list.
Criteria Definitions
Environment
Environment refers to the ability to live in a single-sex community or a coed community. This criteria has no affect on residence hall fee rates. Students who find that living environment is their primary consideration should indicate in the application that Environment is their first priority.
Occupancy
Occupancy refers to the amount of residents in each room. Rooms are available in three occupanies: single-occupancy (one person; no roommate), double-occupancy (two total roommates), and triple-occupancy (three total roommates). Most rooms are double-occupancy; demand for single-occupancy rooms usually exceeds the availability; demand for triple-occupancy usually meets the availability.
Occupancy, combined with meal plan selection, directly affects residence hall fee rates. Students who find that room occupancy is their primary consideration should indicate in the application that Occupancy is their first priority.

Program
Program refers to Theme Programs; applicants may request to live in a community that has a Theme Program. Depending on the location and size of the program community, selecting Program as the first priority may limit the ability to meet the other three criteria preferences. For students who are assigned to a Theme Program, participation in program activities is optional. However, students who enroll in at Academic Theme Program (ATP) and register for the one- or two-unit course component (seminar) must attend all class sessions and complete all required assignments.
This criteria has no affect on residence hall fee rates. Students who find that living in a Theme Program community is their primary consideration should indicate in the application that Program is their first priority.
Room Configuration
Room Configuration refers to rooms are arranged relative to other rooms in a residence hall; rooms are arranged in three configurations: standard, quad and suite. Standard configuration refers to rooms that are located off common hallways. Quad configurations are similar to standard configurations, with the single difference being that rooms are located off of a shared living space instead of a hallway. Residents in standard and quad configurations share community-wide bathrooms. Suite configurations refer to rooms that are located off of shared living spaces and include bathrooms that are shared with other members of the suite. Students who live in a suite configuration may have more complex interpersonal roommate interactions than those who live in a standard room configuration.
This criteria has no affect on residence hall fee rates. Students who determine that the room configuration is their primary consideration should indicate in the application that Room Configuration is their first priority.
